一句話定義

Yi is the second Heavenly Stem, Yin Wood in nature, its glyph the bent shape of a young sprout. In BaZi it stands for the supple vitality of flowers and vines — conquering by yielding, growing along whatever the terrain offers.

Glyph & Imagery

The glyph of Yi is a single bent line — the stem of a seedling pressed down yet still reaching. The Shuowen explains: "Yi depicts spring plants emerging in twists, the Yin qi still strong, so they come out yi-yi (haltingly)." That doubled syllable paints the whole picture: new growth pushing through resistance, bend by bend.

As an element image Yi is Yin Wood: flowers, young crops, climbing vines. It lacks Jia's trunk but owns what Jia never will — suppleness. Wind comes, it bows; a stone blocks, it detours. Its life force hides in its flexibility.

Elemental Nature

Yi shares the East and spring with Jia, its Lu throne in Mao. Yin Wood is soft by design: it never competes for height, yet survives in any crack. In all four seasons Yi loves Bing Fire — flowers face the sun and will not open without it.

The Di Tian Sui says: "Yi Wood, though soft, can carve the ram and cleave the ox; embracing Ding and Bing, it rides the phoenix and mounts the monkey." Rooted in the Earth of Chou or Wei it still has power, and with Bing or Ding showing in the stems it need not fear even sitting on the Metal branches Shen or You. Soft is not weak — that is the whole of Yi.

Combinations & Clashes

Yi combines with Geng into Metal — the "combination of benevolence and righteousness": Wood's kindness matched to Metal's resolve. Readers often see it as mutual taming — decisive Geng sheathes its edge for Yi, and soft Yi gains a spine to lean on.

Yi clashes with Xin: Xin Metal is the scissors made for cutting flowers. This is Yi's most feared attacker — Yin Metal cutting Yin Wood, fine-bladed and merciless. The rescue is Bing Fire: the moment Bing combines with Xin, the sun confiscates the scissors.

Role in a BaZi Chart

On the day stem, Yi is the Yi Wood Day Master — personality, strength and its philosophy of borrowed force are covered on that page. Elsewhere it translates by Ten God: to a Ding Fire Day Master, Yi is Indirect Resource; to Ji Earth, Seven Killings; to Geng Metal, both Direct Wealth and combination partner.

One famous in-chart image belongs to Yi: "the vine entwining the tree." When Yi and Jia stand together in the stems, a weak Yi climbs Jia's trunk and borrows its height — the first combination to check whenever both woods appear.

Calendar & Culture

Second in the cycle, Yi defines "runner-up" in Chinese: below Jia grade sits Yi grade, after the Jia party comes the Yi party. Old ledgers, examination halls and pharmacies all numbered by stems, making Yi the eternal number two.

A curious footnote: because the glyph resembles a hook, scholars borrowed it as a proofreading mark — a small "yi" drawn where reading paused, called "tu yi." One Heavenly Stem, moonlighting as history's earliest bookmark.
