Geng is unwrought iron and the mountain-splitting axe: coarse, hard, edged with the season of reckoning. Autumn cuts everything back, and that is Geng's command — its mission is to decide and to harvest: sever what must end, gather what has ripened.

Geng's central image is "must pass through fire": ore that never enters the furnace stays a rock; struck by Ding's flame, stubborn iron becomes a sword.
