What Are the Ten Gods?

The Ten Gods (十神, Shi Shen) are BaZi's translation layer. A chart's raw material is Five Elements in Yin-Yang polarity — but "you have a lot of Metal" says nothing about life. The Ten Gods convert every character into a relationship with your Day Master: this Metal is your career authority, that Water is your creative output, this Wood is your money. The moment elements become gods, a chart starts talking about jobs, spouses, mentors and rivals.

Despite the dramatic name, nothing is worshipped — "gods" (神) here means functional agents, closer to "operators" or "archetypes." The system is fully mechanical: given any Day Master and any other Heavenly Stem (visible or hidden inside a branch), the god is determined with no judgment calls.

How the Ten Are Derived

Two questions generate the whole system:

1. Element relation — how does the character's element relate to the Day Master's? There are exactly five possibilities: same element as me, generates me, is generated by me, is controlled by me, controls me.
2. Polarity — is its Yin-Yang polarity the same as mine or opposite?

Five relations × two polarities = ten gods:

Worked example with a 甲 (Yang Wood) Day Master: 庚 (Yang Metal) controls Wood with the same polarity → Seven Killings; 辛 (Yin Metal) controls with opposite polarity → Direct Officer. Same element pressure, two very different careers-textures — this is why polarity doubles the alphabet.

A useful rule of thumb runs through the table: opposite-polarity gods are the "direct" (正) versions — orderly, conventional, sustainable; same-polarity gods are the "indirect" (偏/七/劫) versions — intense, unconventional, higher variance. Classical texts gloss this as opposites attracting into cooperation while likes compete.

The Five Families, God by God

Peers (same element): Friend & Rob Wealth. Your siblings, colleagues, competitors — and your own self-reliance. Friend (比肩) is steady solidarity: partnership, stamina, holding your ground. Rob Wealth (劫财) is competitive drive that can rally allies or, true to its name, drain your wealth through rivals, splits and impulsive generosity. Peers strengthen a weak Day Master; in a strong chart they crowd it.

Output (what I generate): Eating God & Hurting Officer. Your talent leaving your body — words, works, performance. Eating God (食神) is the gourmet's star: patient craft, taste, wellbeing, quiet creativity. Hurting Officer (伤官) is the prodigy's star: brilliant, expressive, allergic to authority — it literally "hurts the Officer," the god of rules. Superb in creative and competitive fields; combustible inside rigid hierarchies.

Wealth (what I control): Direct & Indirect Wealth. What you can manage and monetize. Direct Wealth (正财) is earned income — salary, savings, diligence, and classically the wife star in a man's chart. Indirect Wealth (偏财) is opportunity money — business, investment, windfalls, generosity with cash flow. Wealth gods also drain the Day Master (controlling takes effort): a weak chart flooded with wealth is the classic "rich chart, exhausted owner" pattern.

Power (what controls me): Direct Officer & Seven Killings. The pressure that shapes you. Direct Officer (正官) is legitimate authority — rank, reputation, discipline, career through institutions; classically the husband star in a woman's chart. Seven Killings (七杀) is raw, adversarial pressure — crisis, command, the entrepreneur's and general's star. Untamed, it reads as danger; disciplined by a Resource or an output god, it becomes formidable executive power.

Resource (what generates me): Direct & Indirect Resource. What feeds you — knowledge, protection, legitimacy, mother figures. Direct Resource (正印) is orthodox nourishment: education, credentials, patronage, calm. Indirect Resource (偏印) is unorthodox insight: specialized skill, intuition, solitary research — brilliant and slightly detached. Resources shield the Day Master and digest incoming pressure from power gods.

Reading Gods in Context

Three principles keep the Ten Gods honest:

• No god is good or bad. Each has a constructive face and a destructive face; which shows depends on Day Master strength, season, and what sits next to it. Seven Killings with discipline is a commander; Direct Resource in excess is dependency.
• Strength reverses meaning. A strong Day Master welcomes wealth, power and output (they give the surplus work to do) and is crowded by more peers and resources. A weak Day Master is nourished by peers and resources and buckled by heavy wealth or killings. The same god flips value with the chart's condition.
• Position matters. The same god plays differently in the year pillar (ancestors, early life), month (parents, career stage), day branch (spouse palace) or hour (later life, children). A Direct Officer in the month pillar is a career signature; in the hour pillar it colors legacy.

Common Misconceptions

• "Seven Killings means violence" / "Hurting Officer ruins careers." The alarming names are Tang-Song era shorthand for pressure and rule-breaking output. In modern terms: entrepreneurs run on Killings, creators on Hurting Officer.
• "More wealth gods = more money." Wealth must be carried. A weak Day Master with heavy wealth sees opportunity pass through tired hands; the fix is strengthening, not more wealth.
• "The gods are personality types." They are relationships, not fixed traits — the same person expresses different gods as luck cycles activate different characters (see luck cycles).
• "A missing god is a missing life area." Absence shifts how a domain is accessed (often via hidden stems or incoming years), it does not delete the domain.
