What Are Luck Cycles?

A BaZi chart is fixed at birth — eight characters that never change. Yet no life is one unbroken line. BaZi's answer is the luck cycle system: on top of the static natal chart runs a moving calendar of influences, of which the two workhorses are the Dayun (大运, ten-year luck pillars) and the Liunian (流年, annual luck).

The classical metaphor is worth keeping: the chart is the vehicle, the luck cycles are the road. A sturdy vehicle on a rough road still rattles; a modest vehicle on a smooth highway cruises. This is the system's explanation for why two people with similar charts diverge, and why one person's thirties feel nothing like their twenties. Timing, in BaZi, is not an afterthought — the same chart means different things in different decades.

Dayun: the Ten-Year Pillars

Each Dayun is a full stem-branch pair — the same kind of unit as your four natal pillars — governing roughly ten years.

Where they come from. The sequence starts from your month pillar and walks the sexagenary cycle — forward for men born in Yang years and women born in Yin years, backward for the reverse. If your month pillar is 丙寅, a forward sequence runs 丁卯, 戊辰, 己巳… — each pair one decade. The starting age is computed from the distance between your birth time and the nearest solar term, which is why one person's cycles begin at 3 and another's at 9.

How they work. The incoming pillar acts like a temporary fifth pillar: its stem and branch enter every interaction the natal chart supports — generating, controlling, combining, clashing. Concretely, a new Dayun can:

• Re-weight the Day Master: a Water-heavy decade arriving over a weak Water Day Master turns a support-starved chart into a supported one — the classic "late bloomer" pattern is often just a late favorable Dayun.
• Activate dormant Ten Gods: a chart with faint wealth stars can enter a wealth decade; a quiet chart can enter a Seven Killings decade and suddenly live under pressure and ambition.
• Disturb the structure: a Dayun branch that clashes your natal month or day branch (see branch clashes) tends to time relocations, career pivots and relationship turns within that decade.

A refinement worth knowing: many practitioners read the stem as flavoring the first half of the decade and the branch the second half, since branches carry more mass. Transitions between two very different Dayun — say a Fire decade handing over to a Water decade — are themselves sensitive windows.

Liunian: the Annual Layer

Inside each decade, every calendar year contributes its own stem-branch — 2026 is 丙午, a Fire year. The Liunian interacts with both the natal chart and the current Dayun, and the three-way result is what a yearly reading actually reads.

The division of labor is clean:

• Dayun = climate. Ten years of background weather: which life domains are lit up, whether the Day Master is supported or pressured.
• Liunian = weather. The year's specific trigger: when a clash actually fires, when a combination completes, when a wealth or officer star physically arrives.

Classical shorthand: the Dayun loads the gun, the Liunian pulls the trigger. A difficult configuration usually needs both layers pointing the same way before it manifests as an event — which is also why single-factor year readings ("it's your zodiac clash year, beware!") are far cruder than the real system. Finer layers exist below the year — monthly (流月) and daily (流日) luck — but decade + year carry most practical weight.

Reading a Cycle as Good or Difficult

A cycle is never good or bad in the abstract — only relative to what your chart needs. The reference is the chart's favorable element (用神, the "useful god"):

• A Dayun delivering your favorable element marks a supported phase: efforts compound, help appears, expansion is affordable.
• A Dayun delivering what your chart already has too much of — or what pressures its weak point — marks a contrary phase: the season for consolidation, learning, and keeping commitments light.

Two corollaries follow. First, "bad" decades are navigable: their point is adjusted strategy, not doom — the merchant's version is "in a contrary decade, guard the shop; in a favorable one, open branches." Second, the same year lands differently on different people: 丙午 delights a chart that craves Fire and burdens one drowning in it. There is no universally lucky year.

A favorable decade is leverage — wasted if you don't act; a contrary decade is training — many disciplined careers are built in one and harvested in the next. The chart never promises events; it prices efforts differently at different times. That framing is also the classical one: 知命 ("knowing the decree") was always paired with 造命 — working with the season you are in.

• "My luck changes exactly on January 1st of the cycle year." Dayun boundaries follow your personal starting age and solar-term math, not calendar round numbers — and transitions blend over months, not midnight.
• "A bad Dayun means ten bad years." It means ten years where certain strategies are expensive. Liunian within it still vary, and well-played contrary decades regularly out-earn badly-played favorable ones.
• "Luck pillars rewrite my personality." The natal chart stays the baseline; cycles re-weight which parts of it are active. A quiet chart in a Seven Killings decade is still a quiet chart — under deadline.
• "Everyone's 2026 is lucky/unlucky." A year's stem-branch is universal; its effect is chart-specific. Zodiac-only year predictions use one-eighth of the information.
