Hai亥

The oracle glyph of Hai is a pig drawn without head or tail — the zodiac bond sealed at the level of etymology. The Shuowen: "Hai means root-stock — in the tenth month a faint Yang rises to meet Yin at its fullest." Gai is the root beneath dead grass: October's life withdrawn underground, waiting.

Hai hides Ren and Jia: a seed of Wood soaking in the open sea. This is the deepest foreshadowing at the cycle's close — Wood hidden in Water, the beginning packed inside the end. After Hai comes Zi and the solstice; one Yang is reborn, and the wheel starts again.

By order Hai is a Yin branch, but its main hidden stem is Yang Water Ren — "Yin in body, Yang in function": compute it as Ren, with Jia's birth stage on file (the Hai-Mao-Wei frame is cradled here). Hai is Ren's own Lu throne: rivers reaching the sea, Water come home.

Early-winter water is cold but unfrozen — living water, exactly what grows Wood: Jia is born in Hai and Yi drinks from it. The old saying names Hai "the Gate of Heaven" — where water and sky share one color, the cycle's point of closure and transcendence.

Yin-Hai combines into Wood — Water feeding Wood, desire flowing downhill, echoed by the Jia already hidden inside: of the six combinations, the one that transforms most genuinely. Hai-Mao-Wei forms the Wood frame from Hai's cradle. Si versus Hai clashes fire and water at the birth-stage corners — second-guessing, long roads, restless plans.

Hai self-punishes: two seas meeting, attrition without a floor — one of the four self-punishments. Shen harms Hai. Its ledger is short, but the Wood line is decisive: when Hai meets Yin, or Hai-Mao-Wei assembles, the story of Water becomes the story of Wood.

In the pillars Hai computes as Ren Water, with Jia's birth stage noted. A Ren Day Master roots its throne here; a Jia Day Master finds its birth-stage Resource — a weak winter Wood meeting Hai is a bud finding water. Fire faces Officer stars at the door (Bing dreads the Si-Hai seesaw most); Earth watches a Wealth star flow past in volume.

Hai is also a Traveling Horse branch, and its horse swims: overseas moves, ocean crossings, lives between cultures — one league farther than the land routes of Yin and Shen. Rich in both Water and hidden Wood, Hai is the cycle's emblem of learning that travels.

The Hai hour (9–11 p.m.) was "people settled watch" — voices quiet, households abed: the day folds up at Hai just as the year begins its storage in the Hai month.

Last in line, Hai lent its shape to the proverb "mistaking Hai for pig, Lu for fish" — the classical idiom for copyist errors, born of its resemblance to the character for swine. In the cycle, Gui-Hai closes all sixty pairs: Hai once more the designated finisher. And finishing is preparation — JiaZi follows, and the wheel turns from the top.
