Wu午

The oracle glyph of Wu depicts a pestle, or a bridle rope. The Shuowen: "Wu means to meet against — in the fifth month Yin qi rises against Yang, pushing up through the ground." Read that carefully: at Yang's absolute peak, Yin has already begun. The summer solstice sits inside the Wu month; "the first Yin is born" happens under the fiercest sun.

Wu and Zi form one axis: Zi hides the birth of Yang, Wu the stirring of Yin. Noon and due south-north — the "Zi-Wu meridian" — take their names from this shared spine of time and space.

By order Wu is a Yang branch, yet its main hidden stem is Yin Fire Ding — like Zi, "Yang in body, Yin in function": compute it as Ding, with Ji Earth as middle qi. Wu is the Lu throne of both Ding and Ji, and Fire's imperial peak (the Yin-Wu-Xu frame centers here).

The Wu month and Wu hour are the year's and day's maximum burn. With Ji inside, blazing fire bakes earth — Wu's fire runs dry and hot, different in temperament from Si's smelting flame: fiercer, faster, more emotional.

Wu-Wei is a six-combination — fire and earth embracing with neither changing element (the classic case of "combining without transforming"), gentlest of the six. Yin-Wu-Xu forms the Fire frame at Wu's peak. Zi versus Wu heads the cardinal clashes: water and fire at open war, the fastest-acting of all.

Wu self-punishes — two Wu together is blaze feeding blaze, one of the four self-punishments: double-Wu charts tend to wrestle themselves. Chou harms Wu. Every relation on Wu's ledger runs hot; whatever it triggers is best handled quickly, never left to simmer.

In the pillars Wu computes as Ding Fire, with a footnote for Ji's root. A Ding Day Master takes it as Lu; a Bing Day Master takes it as the Blade — strength past the brim, wanting a Killing star's bridle. Wood breathes out through it, Metal faces Officer fire, Water sights Wealth.

Wu belongs to the Peach Blossom quartet (Zi, Wu, Mao, You). And a caution in passing: the zodiac Horse and the Traveling Horse star are different instruments — the latter is calculated by frame (Shen-Zi-Chen posts at Yin, etc.), not by the animal. Keep the two saddles apart.

The Wu hour is noon itself — "Wu meal" (lunch), "Wu rest" (siesta), "before-Wu / after-Wu" (a.m./p.m.): of all twelve hours, only Wu survives intact in everyday modern Chinese. Executions were set for "Wu hour, third quarter," peak Yang deployed to suppress the departing ghost.

The Wu month brings the Dragon Boat Festival — fifth day of the fifth month, a doubled five the ancients read as hazardous, countered with realgar wine, mugwort and dragon boats. Poisons swarming at Yang's very peak: the philosophy of "Yin born at Yang's extreme," acted out as folklore.
