Zi子

The oracle glyph of Zi is an infant in swaddling — its root meaning is simply "baby." Placing it first among the branches is deliberate philosophy: the coldest month and the darkest hour are exactly where new life begins. The winter solstice lives inside the Zi month; "the first Yang is born" happens here.

Zi's element is Water, and it hides a single stem — Gui, pure rain-and-dew water. Among the four purest branches (those hiding only one stem), Zi's energy is clean and undivided, unmixed with residual qi.

By sequence Zi is a Yang branch, yet its hidden stem is Yin Water Gui — hence the classical note "Yang in body, Yin in function": count it Yang for luck-cycle direction, read it as Gui for interactions. This trips up every beginner once; remember "Zi reads as Gui" and move on.

Zi is water at its coldest: in season at midwinter, still and deep. For anyone born in a Zi month, seasonal balance is the first question — whether Bing or Ding Fire appears decides if this cold pool is a well of wisdom or a frozen board.

Zi and Chou form one of the six combinations (into Earth); Shen-Zi-Chen makes the three-harmony Water frame with Zi as its peak — all three present, and Water surges across the chart. Zi versus Wu is one of the four cardinal clashes: water against fire, the fastest and fiercest, often read as restlessness and emotional swings.

Also on file: the Zi-Mao punishment ("punishment of rudeness") and the Zi-Wei harm. Weigh branch relations in the order clash > combination > punishment > harm; for Zi, the questions that matter most are always whether Wu stands opposite and whether Shen and Chen stand by.

In the pillars Zi acts as pure Gui Water: strength assessment and useful-god selection all compute it as Gui. It is Gui's own Lu throne and Xin Metal's birth stage — a Xin Day Master meeting Zi earns the classical praise "white metal, clear water."

Zi in the year branch means the Rat; in the hour branch it is the Zi hour, which straddles two days. Around 11 p.m. precision matters more than anywhere else in the calendar — one minute can flip the entire day pillar.

The Zi hour opens the day, the Zi month (holding the solstice) opens Yang's return, and JiaZi opens the sixty-pair cycle — Zi takes the head seat in all three systems of time. On the compass it is due North: Beijing's palace axis is literally the "Zi-Wu line."
