You酉

The oracle glyph of You is a wine jar — it is the proto-form of the character for wine itself. Eighth-month millet ripens into brewing season; the Shuowen: "You means completion — in the eighth month the millet matures and fine wine can be made." A month recorded as a wine jar: harvest bottled inside a glyph.

You hides pure Xin, palace-opposite to Mao's pure Yi: the eastern garden facing the western cellar and cutlery room. You is Metal finished — harvested, refined, shelved, every roughness polished away.

You is Xin Metal's Lu throne and Metal's imperial peak — the Si-You-Chou frame centers here. One hidden stem, full-strength qi: it feeds Water at full rate and cuts Wood at full rate, with no middle setting.

Mid-autumn Metal rules with the season's killing air; You-month charts carry decisiveness as a factory default. But Metal at maximum needs an outlet — Ren's rinse ("white metal, clear water") or Ding's forge. Energy this pure must be spent; stored, it cuts its own sheath.

Chen-You combines into Metal — the wet vault feeding the blade point-blank: You's supply line. Si-You-Chou forms the Metal frame at You's peak. Mao versus You is a cardinal clash — blade against garden, read in sinew and bone, hard either-or choices, lives split between two places.

You self-punishes: two jars of strong wine drinking each other down, edge grinding edge — one of the four self-punishments. You also harms Xu. Its relations are few and hard-edged — combine or clash, little ambiguity between: exactly the temperament of Xin Metal.

In the pillars You delivers Xin at full strength: a Xin Day Master takes its throne, a Geng Day Master takes the Blade. Wood faces Officer stars at close quarters (Yi dreads this most), Water receives a crystalline Resource star, Fire counts a Wealth star of full fineness.

You is also one of the four Peach Blossoms — the old name "Xianchi" literally means the pool where the sun sets, and the You hour is sunset: romance with dusk for a backdrop. You-flavored charm runs to refinement, taste and ritual.

The You hour (5–7 p.m.) was "sundown watch," when chickens return to roost — the Rooster's bond with You comes from precisely this dusk tableau. Nearly every character bearing the You radical concerns wine: brew, pour, drunk, sober, toast — one radical, an entire history of drinking culture.

The You month holds Mid-Autumn: the full moon of the fifteenth night falls here — harvest, reunion, wine raised to the sky. Su Shi's "When did the bright moon first appear? I lift my wine and ask the heavens" was asked of a You-month moon.
