Chen辰

The oracle glyph of Chen depicts a clam-shell sickle — the earliest farm blade — tying the character to the farming season. The Shuowen: "Chen means quake: in the third month Yang qi moves, thunder rolls, and the people take to the fields."

Chen is matched to the Dragon, the only mythical beast of the twelve. The Dragon governs transformation and rain-making — a perfect fit for Chen's hidden anatomy: Wu Earth for body, Yi Wood as residue, Gui Water in the vault. Earth carrying wood and water, clouds and rain on board: no other branch could carry the Dragon.

Chen is the Water vault — the Shen-Zi-Chen frame banks its Water here. As wet earth it breeds Metal, hosts Wood and stores Water: the most fertile of the four Earth branches, the soil where anything survives.

The Di Tian Sui says Gui Water "finding the dragon, moves — its transformations divine": Gui meeting Chen opens the full rain-making circuit. More broadly, classical texts often require Chen present for a stem combination to truly transform. Chen is the cycle's transformer station.

Chen-You is a six-combination (into Metal) — wet earth breeding metal at close range. Shen-Zi-Chen makes the Water frame with Chen as vault. Chen versus Xu is the clash of the two great storehouses — both vault doors blown open, Earth quaking against Earth, read as foundations shaken and boards overturned.

Chen self-punishes: two Chen together grind inward (one of four self-punishments — Chen, Wu, You, Hai). It also suffers harm from Mao. Chen's relations are few, but every one of them turns on the hinge of a vault door.

Chen works three jobs: Wu Earth main qi in ordinary interactions; the Water vault holding Ren and Gui (a Water-weak chart gains a cistern; a Water-flooded chart clashed at Chen bursts its reservoir); and wet-earth climate control — in a scorched chart, Chen is the fire extinguisher with water built in.

Its Yi Wood residue also makes Chen spring's last root — Wood born in the third month still finds footing here. Judging Chen adds one extra step over other branches: first decide whether what sits in the vault is the chart's medicine or its disease.

The Chen hour (7–9 a.m.) was "meal watch," breakfast time in the old day-count. The Chen of "morning stars" and "auspicious hour" in literary Chinese both extend from this branch — celestial conjunctions and good moments alike were called chen.

The Chen month holds two solar terms: Qingming (tomb-sweeping, spring outings) and Grain Rain ("rain brings a hundred grains"). Ancestral memory and planting rain in a single month — a fitting itinerary for the branch that stores water and summons rain.
