Alone among the twelve, the Dragon does not exist in nature — it is thunder, rain and the rise of rivers bundled into one totem. It maps to the branch Chen: the Chen hour (7–9 a.m.) is when dragons were said to walk the rain, and the Chen month, third of spring, is when showers pull every shoot upward.

Chen is Yang Earth hiding Wu, Yi and Gui, and doubles as the Water vault — the whole winter's water stored in one hold. Cloud-riding, water-hoarding, growth-carrying: Chen's layered structure is the metaphysical prototype of the dragon symbol itself.

The texts' keywords for Dragon natives: scale, audacity, allergy to mediocrity. Dragon confidence borders on a birthright — goals are habitually set at altitudes others call absurd, backed by a real gift for generating momentum. The baby booms in every Dragon year are demographic proof of this symbol's pull.

The shadow is face and amplitude: fondness for spectacle, deafness to cold water, meteoric when the wind is right and hardest-falling when it is not. The best equipment a Dragon can own is one person nearby who dares to speak plainly.

The Dragon's trine allies are the Monkey and Rat (Shen-Zi-Chen, the Water frame): strategy and execution orbiting the Dragon's momentum — the career triangle par excellence. Its pair is the Rooster (Chen-You): the phoenix-and-dragon archetype comes from exactly here — one builds the wave, the other does the math.

Its clash is the Dog (Chen-Xu): two great earth vaults colliding, classically the "heaven's net and earth's snare" clash, fiercest in wars of conviction. Chen's self-punishment is worth noting too — two dragons in one arena compete rather than combine. Beyond pairings, the Dragon's real question is "vault with or without a key": whether Chen should be opened is a full-chart structural call.

Chen years (2024, 2036…) are the Dragon's Ben Ming Nian; Xu (Dog) years clash Tai Sui — the Chen-Xu clash shakes foundations: property moves, relocations and organizational upheavals tend to land in such years.

Shen and Zi years complete the Water frame — whether that feels like a fish returning to water or a flood breaching the vault depends on the chart's preferences. A Chen year meeting a Chen birth branch adds the self-punishment: guard against second-guessing. Yearly fortune is never a zodiac-level question — it requires a chart laid open.
