The Monkey maps to the branch Shen. At the Shen hour (3–5 p.m.) the sun slants west — prime time for monkey troops to call and play; the Shen month opens autumn, Metal qi stirring as the heat retreats. The glyph pictures lightning extending — stretch, reach, recoil: precisely a monkey's physics.

Shen is Yang Metal hiding Geng, Ren and Wu: axe-grade metal as the body, running water and mountain earth within. Metal decides, Water schemes — the Metal-feeds-Water cycle completes inside Shen itself, which is why Monkey cleverness always ships with execution: thought and deed arrive together.
