Bing丙

The archaic glyph of Bing resembles a stand or a fish tail, later borrowed for the stem. The Shuowen places it "in the South, where all things become bing-ran" — brilliantly visible. Ever since, Bing has meant radiance and prominence: "bright as sun and stars," "shining through the ages."

Its element image is the fire of the sun, counterpart to Ding's lamp flame. Two solar properties define Bing: universal shine — warming everything, choosing no favorites, keeping no accounts — and constancy, holding its own orbit regardless of the world's weather.

Bing's Lu sits in Si; it peaks in the summer months. Yang Fire is fierce and open: it "bullies frost and scorns snow," melting even Geng Metal's killing chill — yet it respects the autumn river, for Ren Water can mirror the sun or drown it.

The Di Tian Sui: "Bing Fire is fierce — it bullies frost and scorns snow; it can smelt Geng Metal, yet turns timid before Xin." Bing melts stubborn ore, but before the polished jewel of Xin Metal it sheathes its temper — Bing and Xin combine, and ferocity melts into attachment. One maxim captures Bing's whole character: hard on the hard, soft on the soft.

Bing combines with Xin into Water — the "combination of awe and restraint," the most dramatic contrast among the five pairs: the majestic sun bound to the delicate jewel. When both appear in the stems, the sun's light is held captive by the gem, and its universal shine pays a tax.

Bing clashes with Ren, the ocean — fire and water in collision. Yet "sun and river reflecting each other" is also a celebrated structure: Bing facing Ren across the chart is the morning sun mirrored in the water, radiance doubled. Only when Water floods unchecked does the image collapse into real war.

On the day stem Bing is the Bing Fire Day Master — the stage personality, fully read on that page. Elsewhere it translates by Ten God: to Wu Earth, Indirect Resource (the sun warming the land); to Geng Metal, Seven Killings (the furnace refining ore); to Yi Wood, the Hurting Officer — and also the sunlight it cannot live without.

In the seasonal-balance system Bing holds special rank: winter-born Jia, Yi in every season, cold damp Ji Earth — half the system queues up for Bing's thaw. Facing a frozen chart, rule one is: find the Bing.

Third in sequence, Bing served as the ordinal "C": grade Bing, class Bing, party Bing. And because Bing is Fire, "consign to Bing" became the elegant phrase for burning — a letter ending with "after reading, consign to Bing" politely asks the reader to burn it.

In day-counting, Bing days were favored for sun-related rites. Ordinal, fire and ritual — three cultural lives of a single stem.
