Ren壬

The oracle glyph of Ren resembles a loom spindle, the midpoint dot marking thread accumulating; later it took the ninth stem's seat. The Shuowen reads it through ren "pregnancy" — "Yin at its extreme, Yang newly born, the image of one with child": at winter solstice the first Yang stirs, and next year's life is already carried inside Ren Water.

Its element image is Yang Water: rivers, seas, floodwaters. Against Gui's rain and dew — water of the sky — Ren is water of the land: channeled, directional, high-volume. Dynamic water, organized into a system.

Ren's Lu is in Hai, peaking through winter. Yang Water circulates without pause: it drains Geng Metal's hardness ("white metal, clear water"), moistens parched land — and in anger bursts every levee.

The Di Tian Sui: "Ren Water opens to the river, able to drain Metal's qi; virtue within strength, circulating without stagnation." Then the warning: "it charges heaven and floods earth." An uncontrolled Ren respects no dam. Hence the first question for any Ren chart: is there regulation? Wu Earth's levee is best, Wood's channeling second. Governed, this water irrigates; ungoverned, it drowns.

Ding combines with Ren into Wood — the "clandestine combination," river water and lamplight meeting after dark. Practically: with both exposed, each detains the other — Ren's current lingers for Ding's warmth, Ding's flame is drawn across Ren's expanse — and the Officer (or Wealth) axis turns intricate.

Bing clashes with Ren: sun against sea, the most magnificent opposition of the stems. "Sun and river in mutual reflection" is auspicious; "fire and water at war" is not. The line between them: parity of strength, and whether Wood stands by to bridge.

Ninth in order, Ren was read by the ancients as the station where "Yang qi is conceived" — the solstice month belongs to Ren-Gui Water, and the year's coldest point is precisely where the new cycle begins. Life hidden at the heart of extreme cold: that philosophy is the ground note of Ren.

Famous Ren years include Ren-Chen 1592 (the Imjin War — "Imjin" is simply Ren-Chen in Korean) and Ren-Xu 1082, when Su Shi opened his Red Cliff Rhapsody with "In the autumn of Ren-Xu, the seventh month, just past full moon" — the ninth stem written into the first line of an immortal essay.
