Ox牛

In the race fable the Ox should have won, but the Rat on its back stole the finish — folk memory uses this good-natured concession to fix Chou in second place. The Ox maps to the branch Chou: the Chou hour (1–3 a.m.) is when farm oxen chew cud and gather strength for the morning plough.

Chou is wet Earth hiding three stems — Ji, Gui and Xin: quiet frozen soil on the surface, water and metal veins beneath. The Ox's temperament is therefore anything but simple: slow and silent outside, richly stocked within — the most underestimated sign of the twelve.

The texts' keywords for Ox natives: tenacity, pragmatism, slow-burning loyalty. Earth governs trust, and the Ox's reliability is structural — a promise made is a promise carved in stone; its stamina outlasts everyone who quit three rounds earlier.

The shadow is obstinacy: fixed ideas, poor cornering, and emotions compressed until they detonate — and an Ox eruption is the most frightening of all (Chou hides Metal: thunder with a blade in it). Learning to re-aim mid-course is usually the single step that takes an Ox from good to remarkable.

The Ox's trine allies are the Snake and Rooster (Si-You-Chou, the Metal frame): three rational pragmatists who work together with minimal friction. Its pair is the Rat (Zi-Chou): quickness complementing weight, agility matched to persistence — the classic folk match.

Its clash is the Goat (Chou-Wei): two Earth branches head-to-head, often a war of positions and family philosophy. The Chou-Xu-Wei triple punishment (Ox-Dog-Goat) is also cited, read as recurring entanglement. Again: sign-level matching is one branch of eight — full compatibility reads both complete charts.

Chou years (2021, 2033…) are the Ox's Ben Ming Nian; Wei (Goat) years bring the Tai Sui clash — two earth vaults slamming open, traditionally tied to shifts in home, position and foundations.

Worth noting: Chou is also the Metal vault. In Si or You years completing the Metal trine, Ox natives often see a "treasury opening" pattern. Such yearly details cannot be computed from the animal sign alone — they live in the full chart's preferences, obvious at a glance once you cast it.

Being an Ox only tells us your year branch is Chou. In technical BaZi, Chou wears more hats: the Metal storage vault, a seasonal-balance challenge (cold wet winter soil) — all of which mean something only inside a full chart. The year branch governs early life; the road after mid-life reads mainly from the other three pillars and the luck cycles.
